Oprah Is Wrong About American Education

Newsweek reports that Oprah Winfrey said:

"Say what you will about the American educational system—it does work," she says. "If you are a child in the United States, you can get an education."

This is misleading. American students may be able to get an education, but that education is not adequate: only 34% of public high school graduates, including only 23% of African Americans, graduate from high school ready for college. Since "today's job market demands some kind of education after high school" , the public education system is failing the 66% of students who graduate from high school not ready for college. Is an education system that fails 66% of it's graduates an education system that works, as Oprah Winfrey suggests?
